Hygena

Hygena is a well-known brand in the UK domestic appliance industry, with a rich history dating back to 1925. Initially established in Liverpool to manufacture Hoosier cabinets, the company has undergone several transformations and ownership changes.

Company History and Experience

Hygena’s journey in the kitchen industry began in earnest during the post-war era. In the 1950s, the company introduced its first fully prefabricated kitchen range, combining wall units with sliding doors, built-in sinks, and larders. This innovation, affordable pricing and a wide range of colour choices helped Hygena establish itself as a leader in the fitted kitchen market by the mid-1970s.

The brand has changed hands several times since then. In 1987, it was acquired by the MFI Group, positioning Hygena as their economic choice. Following MFI’s administration in 2008, the Home Retail Group purchased the UK and Irish brand rights in 2009. Most recently, in 2016, Sainsbury’s acquired these rights as part of its takeover of the Home Retail Group.

Product Range

While Hygena is primarily known for its kitchen furniture, the brand has also been associated with various domestic appliances. The main types of appliances linked to the Hygena name include:

Kitchen Appliances:

  • Cookers and hobs
  • Dishwashers
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Cooker hoods

Laundry Appliances:

  • Washing machines

Small Appliances:

  • Blenders, mixers, and juicers

It’s important to note that the current product range may vary, as the brand has undergone several ownership changes and market repositionings.

Spare Parts

As a long-standing brand in the UK market, there is a significant demand for Hygena spare parts. These include:

  • Kitchen unit components (hinges, drawer runners, etc.)
  • Appliance-specific parts (oven elements, fridge shelves, dishwasher spray arms, etc.)

At DP Domestic Spares, we pride ourselves on offering a comprehensive range of genuine and compatible spare parts for Hygena appliances. Our extensive inventory ensures that customers can find the right part to keep their Hygena appliances running smoothly.

Warranty and After-Sales Service

Historically, Hygena offered warranties on their products, typically covering manufacturing defects for a specified period. However, current warranty terms may vary due to the brand’s changing ownership and market presence. We recommend checking with the retailer or current brand owner for the most up-to-date warranty information.

Certifications and Sustainability

Due to the brand’s changing ownership, information about Hygena’s current certifications and sustainability initiatives is limited. However, as a long-standing UK brand, Hygena products are likely to have complied with relevant British and European safety and quality standards throughout their history.

Reputation and Market Presence

Hygena has been a significant player in the UK kitchen and appliance market for decades. At its peak in the 1970s, the brand held a 25% share of the fitted kitchen market. The company’s affordable yet stylish designs were crucial in popularising fitted kitchens in British homes.
